enquiries, were informed by telegram that the engines had been
run under steam satisfactorily.

On the 16th. Julk. Jarrè wrote to Mr. Dyer request- -ing him to fix a date on which the trials specified under the Contract would take place. Mr. Dyer replied promising an early date but refrained from specifying one as the state of his health required him to take a few days holiday in Macau, On the 24th. August, Kr. Jaffé again wrote requesting Kr. Dyer to fix a date, but received no reply. On several subsequent occasione, when Mr. Jaffå met Mr. Dyer at the Pumping Station, he pressed him to fix a date, but without success, he accordingly reported on the 21st. September how matters
stood, proposing that a telegram be sent to the Crown Agents
stating that the engines were wanted for duty and that Hesars. Simpson should be advised to entrust the completion to the Dock Company or make some other arrangements.

8. It was however considered advisable, before taking this step, that Mr. Dyer should be interviewed by the Colonial
Secretary, At the interview, which took place on the 28th.
September, Mr. Dyer attributed to his continued 111-health his
failure to reply to letters and to perform the required trials.
He stated that, during the following week, he intended to give
one of the engines a preliminary run of 10 hours to ascertain
what adjustments were required and would then be prepared to ru
the trials, subsequently doing the same with the other engine.
He hoped to complete the trials by the end of October.
9. In order to avoid any mistake, Hr. Dyer was requested
to confirm in writing the foregoing arrangements. On the 8th.
October, a reply was received from Hr. Dyer stating that there
was very little prospect of carrying out the trials as arranged
Bickness had again returned and left him very weak. If he did
not pick up shortly, he must take a change of air. He could
not go in any longer like this as he had been suffering from
sickness off and on for three months.
